What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and help restore the function and appearance of your mouth. They come in two types: complete dentures, for when all teeth are missing, and partial dentures, for when some natural teeth remain. Made from materials like acrylic resin or metal, dentures improve chewing, speech, and overall smile aesthetics.

What Are the Benefits of Dentures?

Dentures offer several benefits for those with missing teeth:

  • Improved chewing and eating: Dentures restore your ability to chew food properly, making it easier to enjoy a balanced diet.
  • Enhanced speech: They help improve speech clarity by supporting the lips and cheeks, which can be affected by missing teeth.
  • Aesthetic appeal: Dentures give you a natural-looking smile, enhancing your overall appearance and boosting confidence.
  • Facial support: By filling out the shape of your face, dentures prevent the sagging that can occur with missing teeth, helping maintain a youthful look.
  • Custom fit and comfort: Modern dentures are designed to fit comfortably and securely, providing a snug fit that adapts to your gums and jaw.
  • Easy maintenance: Dentures are removable and easy to clean, ensuring good oral hygiene.

These benefits make dentures a practical solution for restoring both function and appearance for those with missing teeth.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Dentures?

The best candidates for dentures are individuals who have lost multiple teeth due to decay, gum disease, injury, or other health conditions. Ideal candidates include:

  • People with extensive tooth loss: Dentures can restore function and appearance in people who are missing several teeth or all teeth in one or both jaws.
  • Individuals with severe tooth decay or gum disease: If teeth are too damaged or decayed to be restored with fillings or crowns, dentures may be the best option.
  • Patients who cannot receive dental implants: Some people may not have sufficient bone density for implants or may have medical conditions that make surgery risky, making dentures a better alternative.
  • For those looking for an affordable solution, dentures are often more cost-effective than other restorative procedures like implants or bridges.
  • People seeking a non-surgical option: Dentures provide a non-invasive way to replace missing teeth, avoiding the need for surgical procedures.

Dentures are a versatile solution suitable for many individuals looking to improve their oral health and quality of life.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the
first step?

The first step to getting dentures is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Weiselberg at North Jersey Dental Group in Fort Lee, NJ. During this appointment, Dr. Weiselberg will evaluate your oral health using diagnostic tools, consider your medical and dental history, and discuss your treatment goals. Based on her assessment, she will help you decide which type of dentures—complete, partial, or All-On-4—are best suited for you. This initial consultation is also a great opportunity to ask any questions you have about the process and understand what to expect moving forward.

What to Expect on the Day of Dentures Treatment

On the day of your denture treatment with Dr. Weiselberg, you can expect a thorough process to ensure your comfort and a perfect fit. Dr. Weiselberg will take impressions of your mouth and might do a bite registration to ensure your new teeth align correctly. You’ll also have a chance to preview your new smile with a wax try-in before the final dentures are made.

If necessary, Dr. Weiselberg may perform extractions on the same day. You may receive immediate dentures to protect your gums and aid healing. These temporary dentures will need to be worn for about 24 hours after surgery. Follow-up visits with Dr. Weiselberg will help ensure your dentures are adjusted properly as your mouth heals.

Dentures Recovery

The first few days after getting your dentures will have a major effect on the final results. Your mouth can expect to be sore as it adjusts to your new set of teeth, but it’s vital that you do not remove your dentures for the first 24 to 48 hours. You will need to take any antibiotics Dr. Weiselberg prescribes, and if you experience pain, you can alleviate it with over-the-counter pain medication and swishing warm salt water in your mouth to help alleviate any swelling.

If your teeth were extracted to fit the dentures, you can expect additional sensitivity and require as much rest as possible for a few days. The more you rest, the more your body can focus on healing. We suggest that patients who have had an extraction request a few days off of work avoid resuming their daily routine during this time. For the first several weeks, as your gums heal, you will need to eat softer foods (oatmeal, yogurt, soups, scrambled eggs, etc.) to prevent irritating the exposed tissues.

Once you’ve fully recovered, you can freely wear your dentures during the day and remove them at night. Much like your natural teeth, you should brush your dentures at least twice a day to remove debris and to keep them feeling fresh. Additionally, you will want to soak them overnight in a non-abrasive denture cleaner for further protection.

Dr. Weiselberg will be happy to discuss some of her preferred products and how to use them properly. If you begin to notice sore areas or rubbing, please contact our office. Dr. Weiselberg may need to adjust the fit of your dentures as the gums adapt to them. Some patients may also require relines over the years, which will help improve the fit of the dentures.
